LocoRoco joins The Best in Japan

Filed under:

Sony loves promoting the friendly blobs of LocoRoco. Although the game a lot of critical acclaim, it still hasn’t garnered the sales warranted by such quality. Well, Sony’s not giving up yet. Sony has announced that the game has entered “The Best” status in Japan, which is similar to America’s Greatest Hits program. The game will be reissued as a budget title on February 22nd for the low price of 2800 yen.

LocoRoco joins other recent additions to “The Best” series, such as: Initial D: Street Stage, We Love Katamari, Metal Gear Acid 2, and Bleach: Heat the Soul 2.

Hopefully, we’ll see our American version reach budget status soon.

PSP sells comfortable sandals

Filed under:

Warning: Completely useless news story ahead.

Is there anything the PSP can’t do? Ultraneo, passing through the stores of Japan, stumbled upon this unique way of using the PSP. It seems to be hanging on a store shelf, displaying a video of people walking around in sandals. I’ll assume that all those diagrams of horrifyingly distorted feet are meant to extol the virtues of foot health: wear these sandals, buy them now!

What will be next? I’m hoping to see a PSP sell panties.

[Thanks, JIMMY!]

Look out! It’s Godzilla!

Filed under:

Daddy Joystiq is reporting that Atari is reviving Godzilla for the PSP (among other systems). Godzilla Unleashed is being created by Pipeworks Software who also worked on the previous Godzilla games, so they know a thing or two about the giant lizard. If you haven’t played a Godzilla game before, they’re basically what you think they’d be, an all out monster fighting game.

Pipeworks is saying that Godzilla Unleashed’s single-player will group the monsters from the history of the film series into four factions that will each have their own narrative path. The cities will feature destructable buildings, so that even when you aren’t hitting a monster, you’re still destroying something.

I think it’s great to have a new Godzilla game on PSP, but am I the only one that would love to see a War of the Monsters sequel on PSP?

The top 5 most creative uses of the PSP

While long-time readers of PSP Fanboy have undoubtedly seen most of these mods and hacks, it’s nice to see five truly fascinating uses of the PSP in action. TechEBlog has collected various videos from YouTube, showcasing the PSP’s incredible flexibility. Watch someone type away on a PSP keyboard; control a robot; play with an analog stick; add a motion sensor; and finally, make calls with a PSP phone.

LocoRoco comes to cellphones

Filed under:

It looks like some Japanese gamers will get to play LocoRoco even if they don’t own a PSP. Gamespot is reporting that the Sony-Ericsson SO703i “smell ‘O’phone” will come with a version of LocoRoco pre-loaded. While the phone does have several aroma faceplates, there was no LocoRoco aroma faceplate announced. Though it’s doubtful many would want to find out what a yellow blob actually smells like.

The phone is scheduled to hit Japan in February. There is no US or Europe release date announced yet.

Ghost Rider, the flaming skull guy previewed

Filed under:

Could Ghost Rider be God of War with a comic license pasted on top? It’s unlikely, but it sure would be amazing if Ghost Rider had even half the game of Kratos. While IGN’s current preview does go over some of the game’s features, it gives very little opinion on the title’s quality. Here are some tidbits from the preview for those interested in Ghost Rider:

  • Ghost Rider has light or heavy attacks he can use to create combos
  • Once an enemy is injured enough, a variety of finishing moves can be used to defeat them
  • Some levels involve riding the Hell Cycle
  • The game has five chapters
  • Between chapters there will be comic book style cut-scenes
  • There will be cameos from other Marvel characters like Lilith and Scarecrow
  • PSP owners will of course get exclusive content like multiplayer via adhoc for up to 4 players

To read the preview in full, check out IGN.

Ask PSP Fanboy: Volume 4

Every Saturday, PSP Fanboy will answer your burning questions. If you have a question for the team, send an e-mail to andrew @ pspfanboy.com with the subject “Ask PSP Fanboy.”

Q: With news of the recent “Hello World” N00bz exploit for 2.81-3.03 PSPs, word is that an un-patched version of GTA: Liberty City Stories will be required for the future downgrader. How can I explicitly tell an un-patched GTA:LCS from a patched one?
A: Hope this image from DCEmu helps:

The unpatched version seems to feature different pictures. As a general rule of thumb, you’ll have to look for the oldest copies you can find, so they’ll most likely be used. When you pop in the disc, make sure the game offers a 2.0 firmware upgrade, not anything higher. Good luck.

See more questions after the break.

Q: Is there any way I can buy the soundtrack to Monster Kingdom: Jewel Summoner?
A: Clayton from Atlus responds, “Due to the fact that these 10 composers are split up among like 5 different
companies, there aren’t any tracks that are downloadable. This is also the reason that it’s unlikely that there will ever be a soundtrack.”

Q:
Do you think Sony or any official commercial company would ever make an emulator that allows PSP to run DS games?
A: No.

Q: Shouldn’t PSP Fanboy have a forum?
A: As much as I’d like a forum, it would be too difficult to implement right now. Heck, we still have to fix our comments system!

Q: Are there actually any deals out there for UMD movies now that they’re not such a hot format of choice anymore? I continue to see Best Buys stacked with them, all at retail (read: usually $20 and up) prices, and I thought stores would be putting them all on clearance by now.
A: The clearances happened a long time ago. Any carriers of UMDs probably continue to purchase them, and want to make profit on them. That being said, Deep Discount DVD, one of my favorite internet retailers, has incredible prices on UMDs, some of them as low as $9. They also have free shipping and a price match guarantee, so check it out.

Q:
I know that movies are region coded but most games are not. What about specialty titles like Konami’s
Silent Hill Experience and Metal Gear Solid: Digital Graphic Novel?
A: They’re not region-encoded either. Anything that launches from the GAME menu does not have a region.

Q: Andrew, do you play/own non-Sony systems? If so which ones, and why?
A: Yes, if you check out my profile, you’ll see that I’m a pretty avid gamer across all platforms. You’ll also see the games that I’m playing or reviewing right now. I own every system, minus an Xbox 360. Why no 360? It didn’t seem worth it until very recently: Gears of War, as you may know, is my Game of the Year from last year. With Mass Effect on the horizon, I may pick up a 360 … but I’m waiting for the HDMI-enabled version first. I also play with the DS and Wii, with the DS getting most of my non-PSP gaming. Games like Elite Beat Agents and Phoenix Wright really tickle my fancy, and I will destroy anyone in Mario Kart DS (I have a nearly undefeated record on the Wi-Fi network!). I’ll be picking up Hotel Dusk really soon as well.

You didn’t ask, but I’ll tell you my Sony support as well. Of course, I own a PS3 as well, and I’m really glad they fixed the PS2 backwards compatibility support, especially because I don’t play PS3 games. My PS3 is used extensively as a Blu-Ray player right now, and I’m loving it: movies look really fantastic in 1080p.

Saturday PSP background explosion

Every Saturday night PSP Fanboy gives your PSP a fresh coat of paint. Well digital paint that is, in the form of background images. This is a good week for RPG fans, we have two RPG backgrounds and a popular anime background.

Check it out after the jump …

The first PSP background is in honor of this week’s release of The Legend of Heroes III. I know someone who is obsessed with this RPG series and I’m sure this will be on her PSP in no time.

Monster Kingdom: Jewel Summoner comes out next month and to tide you over, we have this very stylish PSP background.

And this week’s non gaming background is from the terrific mind twisting anime: The Melancholy of Harui Suzumiya. It’s not what you expect, no matter what you expect. The series has a devoted following for a very good reason.

To put these as your PSP background, you can either save them on your computer and transfer or save them directly to your PSP by visiting m.pspfanboy.com. When you’re viewing the it from your image folder on the PSP, just hit the triangle button to bring up your options and select “Set as Wallpaper”.

Fell free to e-mail or replay in the comments any suggestions for backgrounds you may have and enjoy! Click here! If you’d like to see previous background images.

While you’re waiting for today’s edition of PSP Fanboy Theatre to arrive, why not warm up your PSP’s wi-fi card by accessing psponme.com? It’s a very well organized collection of Flash games, playable through your PSP’s internet browser. You can browse by category, and even download the games for offline play.
