S.PORT brings replays to PSP

Filed under:

London’s Arsenal fans better pack their PSP systems with them when traveling to their next game. Sony is introducing a prototype streaming program called S.PORT which will allow PSP owners to see replays, stats and other game scores via a wireless feed within the Arsenal Football Club.

“It will allow you to check to see whether or not a player really was off side”, said Eric Siereveld, Director of Retail Transport Venues at Sony. There’s a lot that Sony will have to address before the program goes live, such as whether or not it can work on other devices. If the services proves popular enough, there’s no reason not to expand it: “It could be used at any stadium around the UK, or even a golf match where it is sometimes hard to see the ball flying through the air.”

According to Pocket-lint, a trial is expected to begin shortly.

PSP: the system of corporate executives

Filed under:

Are you a corporate executive of a major energy corporation? Probably not. But Manoj Chouthai (pictured, right) is. He’s the CIO and VP of IT at PSEG, one of America’s largest energy companies. He tells Forbes readers that his favorite gadget is the PSP: “I like the fact that I can surf the Web, watch movies, listen to music and play games using one device. This is especially convenient when I am on the road or stuck in an airport.” I’m sure many of our readers feel the same way.

However, this executive would love to see some new features: “I’d make a few additions such as: Global Positioning System navigation, satellite radio, and better real-time streaming capability.” Hey, Mr. Chouthai. if you read PSP Fanboy, you’d know that there is a GPS peripheral. Better real-time streaming, though? Better get a PS3: I think you can afford one!

[Thanks, Nav!]

More developers talk about PSP’s future

Filed under:

IGN is continuing their PSP retrospective feature by speaking with even more developers. They approached EA’s Team Fusion, one of the most prolific PSP developers out there. What’s the one feature of PSP they’d like to use more often? PSP fans will agree with their answer: “For my own team, I think there’s a lot of value in further exploring game sharing and downloadable demos for the PSP. We recently released EA’s first ever downloadable demo for the PSP in Europe (Medal of Honor Heroes) and the response has been really positive. It’s an excellent game and the demo allows new users to try it out and experience a taste for themselves.”

Namco’s Tekken team was also interviewed. They’d love to see Sony make a true system-defining game for PSP: “If Sony could take the lead by creating a defining, exceptional PSP game, I believe that it would become easier for all developers to create new titles. It would also be desirable if SCE’s processes were the same worldwide so that it would be easier to execute simultaneous releases.”

Homebrew users banned from upgrading [Update 1]

Members of the QJ forums seem upset that they can’t upgrade to Sony’s latest official firmware. Why? Because they’ve been using custom firmware on TA-082 PSPs. The 3.30 firmware installer doesn’t seem to run on these modified systems, giving a mysterious ‘DRNffffffd7 error code.” These glitches seem to mirror the many found when Ratchet & Clank was released. So much for respecting the homebrew scene, huh?

Firmware 3.30 gives users some important functionality, such as official support for full-resolution videos and free internet access at T-Mobile Hotspots nationwide. For now, it seems as though users of custom firmware will have to wait until Dark_Alex and the rest of the homebrew community work their magic again.

[Update 1: A patch has been released for those with TA-082 motherboards. You must restore your system to 1.50, then run this patch, in order to run Sony’s official upgrades. Via PlayStation.]

T-Mobile offers free wi-fi with latest update

Filed under:

>Reluctant to update your PSP to the latest firmware? You may want to reconsider. The latest firmware offers PSP users the ability to access T-Mobile’s wi-fi service for free. T-Mobile HotSpots can be found at over 8,000 locations across the US, and can be found in Starbucks, Borders, FedEx Kinko’s, Hyatt, Red Roof Inns, Sofitel and Novotel Hotels, and select airports. Now, you’ll be able to frag friends through Infrastructure almost anywhere in the US … for free! How sweet is that?

I went to a Starbucks to test it out, and found the process is quite easy:

  1. Bring your PSP(R) system to a location that provides a T-Mobile HotSpot. (Refer to the T-Mobile HotSpot U.S. Location Map.)
  2. Select (Network Settings) under (Settings).
  3. Select [Infrastructure Mode].
  4. Select [New Connection].
  5. Select [Use Wireless Hotspot].
  6. Select the T-Mobile HotSpot icon.
  7. If you have an existing T-Mobile HotSpot account, select [Enter User Credentials].
Enter your user ID and password, and then press the right button.
    or
If you do not have an account, select [Use Promotional Access] to sign up for a complimentary six-month T-Mobile HotSpot account. (To qualify for this promotional access, you must authenticate your PSP(R) system to the T-Mobile HotSpot network prior to March 28, 2008.)
  8. Check the contents of the settings list.
  9. Save the settings.

Japan gets five more PS1 games

American gamers haven’t enjoyed an update since Wipeout, and European gamers don’t have any PS1 games available on the PLAYSTATION Store yet. That hasn’t stopped Sony from updating their archive of PS1 titles in Japan. The newest update brings 5 more games, bringing the total number of downloadable titles to 36:

  • Gunners Heaven (SCEJ)
  • Galaxy Fight (Sun Denshi)
  • Hard Edge (Sun Denshi)
  • Arcade Hits Raiden (Hamster)
  • Tall Unlimited (Hamster)

As usual, PSP owners must have a PS3 in order to access the PLAYSTATION Store. When Sony will choose to fix this flaw?

A cure for the lack of Gurumin

Are you having trouble finding Mastiff’s latest? Destructoid is reporting that the Guruminly challenged finally have a new way of finding the game. Simply e-mail the game’s publisher, Mastiff Games, at: findgurumin@mastiff-games.com. Like a financially invested Sherlock Holmes, they’ll track down a copy of the game for you to buy. It comes as no surprise that Gurumin is difficult to find: with such a cute style, the game can only target a specific niche. If you’re interested in picking up the game, don’t forget to read our review first. If you’re still willing to pick up this “by-the-numbers” RPG, check amazon.com: they seem to have plenty of units in stock.

No more mile high club for Japanese gamers

Filed under:

Most airlines don’t allow you to use wireless devices on airplanes. In Japan however, gamers have been able to multiplay to their heart’s content while in flight. That’s changing now though. Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport has decided to ban wireless gaming from all flights. The reason for the move is because apparently wireless devices can interfere with the airplane’s instruments. Maybe this move was done because a small Japanese child controlled a plane with his stylus. That or it’s just precautionary (but I do like the touch screen pilot idea).

UK gamers left waiting for PSone game downloads

Filed under:

I’ve complained from time to time about the selection of downloadable PSone games for PSP in the US, but right now the UK has it much worse. At launch of the PS3, there are zero PSone games on the PlayStation Store for download to PSP. Sony hasn’t made any statement as to when they’ll show up, but the US had to wait a little while for this feature. Still, since the UK launch was much later than in Japan and the US, one would think Sony would have titles lined up for day one. In any case, let’s hope for the sake of UK PS3 owners that the wait isn’t too long.

PSP Video 9 introduces beta converter for 3.30 users

Full resolution PSP videos problematic? Not anymore! Red Kawa has quickly updated their PSP Video 9 software to support 480×272 resolution video for PSP. It was put together so quickly that not everything has been checked. With only two profiles to choose from, don’t expect a full-fledged program. However, it’s great to see that independent developers are already working hard to serve the needs of avid PSP fans.

Download the beta at Red Kawa.
