Months after the initial Japanese release, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe is finally announcing the release of Go!Cam, the PSP camera. The video and photo camera will release on May 16th and will retail for €49.99 (£34.99). Go!Cam has a built in microphone and the ability to change the direction of the camera lens vertically by 180 degrees. The European equivalent of Chotto Shot appears to be Go!Edit, an application which allows users to edit their photos and videos.
‘‘Go!Cam is fantastic news for all those PSP owners looking for something new, fun and creative,” said Stephane Hareau, PSP Marketing Manager, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. “With Summer around the corner and the ability to turn your PSP into a mini camcorder and capture all the best moments in your life, this is yet another reason to get a PSP and to take advantage of truly portable entertainment. It demonstrates yet again the potential, versatility and evolving nature of PSP.'’
No American release has been announced yet.

I may write about PSP gaming news, but I own and play every system (including the new and next-gen consoles). So while I do get to play most any game I want, I can’t help but wish in a feverish state, that certain system exclusives went to other consoles. In this case, if I wanted to list 7 DS games I’d love to see show up on PSP (however unrealistic that may be). So here it is:
- New Super Mario Bros (My favorite DS game, but I would like better power ups and more variety. It would also be great to see what the creators could do in 2D with the power of PSP)
- SNK vs Capcom Cardfighters (Addictive and strategic gameplay that makes me giddy. Only if it comes to PSP, add back in free-roaming and take out the game killing bug)
- Ace Attorney (Great characters, funny cases and it makes you think. That sorta game would work on any system)
- Kirby (He may be cute, but the gameplay is classic)
- Advance Wars (Because Field Commander is good, but not THIS good)
- WarioWare(Because there aren’t enough mini-game titles on PSP)
- Meteos (Because every Q? Entertainment game should be on PSP)
What about you reader? Are there any DS games you’d like to see on PSP, or do you refuse to even entertain the thought?

Your eyes do not deceive you: this Sam Goody store is showcasing an even lower price for PSP: $139.99, a mere $10 above Nintendo DS. What gives? Well, it appears this retailer is offering a $30 mail-in rebate. The offer ends Wednesday, which doesn’t give deal-seekers too much time to take advantage of this pretty awesome sale. Find store locations here.
For those no interested in picking up a new system, amazon.com is offering some nice deals on PSP cases. Sony’s official travel case is going for less than $10, and the popular PlayGear Pocket is going for $13. While I find the hard cases to be too bulky for my tastes, it appears they’re considered pretty standard fare by the PSP community.

For some, PSP simply does not have a long enough battery life. Peripheral manufacturer Blue Raven is trying to offer PSP owners an alternative: the PSP 15-hour extended battery. The battery snaps on to the back of the system, and is supposed to offer “up to 7 times the battery life of the standard PSP battery.”
Like so many other battery solutions for PSP, there are a lot of catches with this newly released product. Firstly, it’s ugly. Doubling the system size certainly makes the system much less portable. (At least it isn’t as ugly as this monstrosity.) Also, we’re doubting the true power of the product. Other third-party batteries have made systems explode, or have under-delivered in terms of performance. The standard PSP battery is 1800mAh; to offer 7 times the battery life, this battery would need to rate 12600mAH. Too bad it doesn’t–it only offers 4500mAh.
It also doesn’t come cheap: $100. We’ve recommended avoiding third-party batteries time and time again, and we’re going to do it again. Honestly, it appears that Sony’s official 2200mAh battery is still your best bet.

What? The US finally gets better box art than Japan? Final Fantasy III on Nintendo DS launched with some spectacular box art in Japan, but American gamers received boring white box art that looked worse than most Chinatown bootlegs. PSP gamers need not worry about the packaging for the upcoming Final Fantasy remakes. We’re delighted to present these two glorious packages made for US audiences.
Let’s hope that Square Enix continues bringing us some love: we want our copies of Final Fantasy Tactics to launch with the Japanese box art. Or else.

In a recent CNET article, Forrester Research analyst James McQuivey explains Sony’s lost opportunity to capture the media download market. Due to their fixation on UMD, Sony has let Apple hold a near-monopoly on digital downloads. “The thing is, Sony could have been all this. The Sony PSP is one of the best portable entertainment media devices that anyone has come up with in years. It has a relatively big screen, plays video beautifully, has good storage and audio. It could have been the first big mobile carrier for TV shows and movies.”
Even now, Sony continues to stand by UMD, instead of offering a true video download service for the handheld. Sony seems content with their position: their attempts in Japan have been lackluster at best, and PSP’s video playback remains crippled due to incomprehensible video restrictions. “You got a company here that’s pushing its own approach on every level, and as a result nobody is using its memory stick or video format,” McQuivey said. “So you don’t have the same robust market that you could have had if you said, ‘We’re going to open this up. You can put your Windows Media files on here. You can put your QuickTime files on here.’”
All hope is not lost, however. A Hollywood executive spoke anonymously to CNET, noting that many Hollywood executives are “pulling for the PSP to emerge as a competitor to the iPod.” Many executives are afraid that Apple will maintain a monopoly over movies as it has had over music. Competition is good for the consumer, and the companies making the content. A PSP video download service makes so much sense, but it won’t happen until Sony stops making lame excuses. “But Sony has been so dysfunctional and clueless when it comes to the Internet,” said the executive. “We keep hoping they pull themselves together … with the PSP video, we’re hoping they create a forward-thinking strategy and stick to it.”

Ready to rap? Good. PaRappa the Rapper is heading to American PSP systems this July, ten years after the release of the original. This remake features all the characters, levels and songs from the original and adds a slew of new wireless options. According to the press release, players can “go head-to-head in ad-hoc battles; wirelessly share a demo level through Game Share; and use the PSP Infrastructure Mode to download eight additional playable remixes for players to rap along to.”
“Bringing PaRappa The Rapper to PSP allows true PlayStation fans to re-connect with this timeless classic,” said John Koller, Senior Marketing Manager, Sony Computer Entertainment America. “This also introduces the beloved PaRappa and his cast of colorful friends to a new generation of fans and potential hip-hop stars on the move.”
For those unaware, PaRappa is considered a pioneer in music games, launching the genre to the mainstream. With Gitaroo-Man Lives!, DJ Max Portable, beaterator, and PaRappa all available on one console, PSP is quickly becoming the gaming machine for music lovers.

Games based on movies tend to launch on every system imaginable. So, why is poor PSP not receiving its own version of Spider-Man 3 this week? Every other console is getting its own version, from PS3 to GBA. Considering how many games appear cross-platform, it should be easy enough to port the PS2 or Wii version to PSP.
Unfortunately, PSP owners wanting some portable Spidey action will have to wait until later this year. Gamestop has a release date set for November–in time for its DVD release?
