14 PSP games that never were

As the new year begins, let’s take a look at some various PSP games that never materialized. Many of these games have been totally scrapped, while others hold on to life support — will they ever see the light of day?

Devil May Cry
A long time ago, close to the PSP’s launch, Capcom announced it was working on a few games for the PSP. One was a game in the Devil May Cry universe. Was it going to be a port of the sublime DMC3? Or would it be something new altogether? Unfortunately, we haven’t heard anything about the game since it was first announced so many years ago.

Landstalker
Climax was supposed to be working on a PSP remake of the classic RPG Landstalker. Of course, this was two years ago. Since then, Climax’s site has kept its Landstalker-inspired layout. But, that’s probably because they never bothered to update the site. Ever.

Elder Scrolls Travels
The PSP take on Oblivion was first discovered in an issue of OPM … and was never heard from again. Constant rumors of the game being canceled don’t bode well for the game. We’re pretty certain this game has been killed.

Heartland
David Jaffe’s project on making gamers cry never saw the light of day. It was supposed to be the Halo of PSP. Too bad it sucked so much that it was canned (Dave’s words, not ours). At least God of War is coming to our system.

Gran Turismo Mobile
Also shown early in the PSP’s life, Gran Turismo Mobile was supposed to be a handheld version of Gran Turismo 4. Then, Polyphony Digital decided to work on the PSP GT5 instead, and has put the PSP version on the backburner since. It’s supposed to come out after the PS3 GT5, which means gamers will be waiting for at least another year or two before the game comes out (if it ever does). Read more here.

Makai Wars
This Nippon Ichi game had a lot of people excited when it was announced for PSP and PS3. Then it was put on hold. And then it was supposedly “resurrected.” We haven’t heard about it since, but we’re hoping NIS has something more than Disgaea 3 planned for the remainder of the year.

TGM-K
Every system has a Tetris game. This puzzler was announced so long ago, we don’t even remember it. Do you?

King of Fighters Maximum Impact Portable
Announced more than two years ago, this PS2 fighter from SNK was supposed to make the jump to PSP. It never happened, did it?

Traxion
LucasArt’s import-your-own-music-and-play-it game never saw the light of day. Thankfully beats came along and did everything Traxion was supposed to offer.

Gekido
Back when this game was first revealed, it looked really cool. In fact, it looked so close to being done. Why did this stylish beat-em-up disappear? Check out IGN’s surreal interview about the game-that-never-was.

Advent Shadow
The next game in the Advent series was quietly canned when the Xbox-exclusive Advent Rising bombed horribly, forcing Majesco to pretty much give up on big-budget gaming altogether. The original Advent Rising was a bit too ambitious for the team — filled with great ideas, but low on execution. See the official press release here.

Earthworm Jim
We were excited to play what looked to be a stunning 3D recreation of Earthworm Jim until we announced that the game was canceled. Atari and Shiny left each other in a messy divorce, and only PSP fans are left crying.

Myst
Who doesn’t like really, really, really obscure puzzles? The classic PC adventure was supposed to find its way home on PSP via Sega. Guess they decided the US market just wouldn’t be interested.

Godzilla Unleashed
In spite of being shown on the PSP, development of Godzilla Unleashed was quietly shoved under the rug at one point. Since then, it’s only been shown on Wii and DS, as Atari pretends a PSP version was never really in the works. Too bad.

That’s a lot of games that were canned or simply turned into vaporware. Every system has its share of games that never make it past development. We’re particularly saddened by the mysterious death of Gekido. But, we’re really hopeful that Capcom will make good on a DMC game for PSP. 2008 will be an interesting year, no doubt.

Direct-feed Dissidia screens get close to new old characters

Filed under:

Everything old is new again in Dissidia for PSP. Final Fantasy VIII’s Squall and Ultimecia, and Final Fantasy II’s Firion and Emperor are reborn again in Square Enix’s upcoming fighting game. Famitsu has scored direct-feed shots of the game, and they look much better than any of the magazine scans we’ve seen so far. This is one of our most anticipated games for 2008 — and we can’t wait to see more in the upcoming year.

PSP Game of the Year, as chosen by other media outlets

Filed under:

Did you hear the news? Syphon Filter: Logan’s Shadow won Game of the Year (and reader’s vote) on PSP Fanboy. So, what did other major media outlets pick as their PSP GOTY? We searched the web and found out.

  • GameSpot chose Puzzle Quest. “Puzzle Quest’s bizarre (and bizarrely successful) confluence of gameplay mechanics really is precisely what makes it so addicting.”
  • GameSpy chose Final Fantasy Tactics. “Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions is arguably one of the best games put forth by Square Enix, with one of the better turn-based strategy gameplay systems yet developed.”
  • IGN chose Syphon Filter. “There’s a reason why Logan’s Shadow is the highest rated PSP title on our site: if you own the system, you owe it to yourself to experience one of the best titles ever made for a handheld.”

The winners for PSP awards are different across all the sites — did one of your favorite games take home the gold?

Fake PSP is shocking (literally)

Filed under:

Give that annoying person a strong, but harmless shock!!!

This is quite possibly the coolest fake PSP we’ve seen so far. The Shock Pro Game Portable 2 (great name, by the way) is made to fool an unsuspecting dimwit into getting a rather surprising … shock. We don’t know if we want to carry two PSP-shaped objects in our jacket. But, we’re so tempted to pick one up and see if we can actually trick someone.

Kingdom Hearts battle system gets Fatal Mode

Filed under:

Birth by Sleep looks good. And, new details and screenshots from Famitsu make it even better. The article highlights two new features of the new PSP Kingdom Hearts game’s battle mode: the Command meter and Fatal Mode. Players are encouraged to battle furiously, as each attack they execute will fill the Command meter. Once the Command meter fills, players will be able to launch a special attack (which can supposedly be custom mapped).

Terra (the guy that looks a bit too much like Zack from Crisis Core) also has an extra mode: Fatal Mode, which unsurprisingly delivers one-hit kills to enemies. Make sure you check out the screenshots by visiting Famitsu.

Man robbed of PSP on Christmas Eve

Filed under:

There have been stories both heartwarming and stomach wrenching this holiday season. However, even a PS3 phone book isn’t as bad as this latest story.

Late Christmas Eve, Zachary Mann was innocently enjoying his PSP on a street corner in York City, Pennsylvania, minding his own business when an unknown gunman robbed him of his PSP.

Now there are certain things human beings just shouldn’t do on Christmas Eve; one of them is robbing someone of their handheld of choice! Hopefully, police catch the thief and Mann gets his PSP, Memory Stick and game back safe and sound.

Worldwide PSP releases for the week of Dec. 30

Filed under:

We’re not sure how often this has happened, but it seems that no games will be releasing on the PSP across all three major regions.

NA Games

  • No new releases

EU Games

  • No new releases

Asia Games

  • No new releases

Chances are, it’s probably not that big a deal for most of you since you’re all very busy with all the great games you received for Christmas. But if you’re a bit disappointed, rest assured that next week the PSP is definitely getting new games.

Playboy: Crush one of ’07’s most innovative games

Filed under:

There is perhaps no other PSP title as innovative and quirky as Zoe Mode’s Crush, a puzzler that successfully implemented 2D and 3D gameplay like we’ve never seen before. And although the game never sold as well as it should have (Boo Sega’s marketing department!), it has received the proper recognition from the critics that it deserves.

To add one more accolade to the list, Playboy has chosen Crush as one of its runners-up for 2007’s most innovative game. Being included among such wonderful games as Rock Band, Portal, Super Mario Galaxy and Assassin’s Creed is no joke … well, maybe the joke is that Assassin’s Creed actually made the list in the first place. Nevertheless, it’s great to see one of our favorite PSP titles getting a little more love.

If you still have yet to play Crush, then shame on you. However, there’s still time to rectify this gross oversight by picking it up today and experiencing one of the most original games ever to grace a handheld.
